This course is intended to provide Chinese students of linguistics with a solid and comprehensive foundation in articulatory phonetics. It is composed of sixteen oral lectures (accompanied by numerous multimedia activities based on materials from a variety of languages), and covers a broad range of related issues, including phonation, vowels, consonants, airstream mechanisms, complex articulation, syllable, and prosody. Each issue is presented and discussed from both theoretical and practical perspectives. Upon completion of the course, students are expected to have a relatively complete mastery of the IPA system, both conversant with its physiological basis and skilled in its application, especially in linguistic fieldwork.
