Choose one of the topics available, research and write a short essay, supporting one of the positions. The essay will count as part of your mid-term exam. Maximum points available is 20. Submit the essay in a .doc or .docx file (NO OTHER FORMATS ARE ACCEPTED).


Essay requirements:

–300 – 350 words

–coherence/cohesion: Quality writing stays on the same topic over the course of a single paragraph as well as the entire essay. Irrelevant points, tangents and stories distract the reader and reduce the quality of the writing.

    = stick to your chosen topic

–thesis clarity, quality and correlation: A good thesis sets the stage for scope of content in paper and using tone that is appropriate for the essay type.

  = stick to the correct tone, grammar and spelling

-structure: introduction, main body (at least three paragraphs), conclusion

–use a standard font (Arial, Times New Roman, Calibri), size 12
–sign the essay with your English name, Chinese name in pinyin and class number

USE THE PROVIDED RESOURCES (CHOOSE AT LEAST ONE ARTICLE) TO DO YOUR RESEARCH AND CITE THEM AT THE END OF YOUR ESSAY IN APA FORMAT!

Topics:

TOPIC (1) Animal Rights and experimentation:
–Position A: Animals are treated in cruel and unusual ways in the laboratory setting for the purpose of testing unnecessary cosmetics products used for human beautification. Such experiments are immoral and should be outlawed by international law.
–Position B: Animal experiments may cause suffering but the improvement of human quality of life and development of pharmaceutical industry takes a much higher priority.

TOPIC (2) Diet and Nutrition
–Position A: Food companies have a moral obligation to keep carcinogens and dangerous chemicals out of the food supply.
–Position B: The consumer is responsible for his or her own nutritional choices.
