This course offers an in-depth introduction to phonetic theory and practice, focusing on English. Topics to be covered include the production and perception of speech sounds (vowels and consonants), phonetic transcription, basic acoustics, airstream mechanisms, coarticulation, the relation between phonetics and phonology, tone and intonation and a general discussion of communication. We will also learn to make and interpret simple recordings, using the Praat program.
