This course is to introduce theories of the theatre. The class
will read dramatic texts drawn from world drama and criticism of the theatre.
Students are encouraged to look at a play both as a literature text and a
theatrical production, both of which shaped by social and cultural contexts.
The aim of the course is to help student to understand the historical
development of drama and how to analyze a play with critical theories of
literature and performance studies.
Theories of Theatre will cover five aspects in theatre studies: 1) the concept of theatre and functions of theories; 2) historical development of drama and the evolution of dramatic genres; 3) formation of dramatic texts and the material factors in theatre productions; 4) linguistic approaches to theatre studies; 5) theatre and society.
